DoT or Department of Telecommunications is a department that comes under the Ministry of Communication in India. The department is responsible for internet censoring and blocking and it actively blocks websites and domain names based on various different factors. We have noticed that the DoT of India is kind of lazy and when a specific page on a whole website comes under fire for something illegal or inappropriate, the department goes ahead and blocks the whole website instead of just accessing the page.

This is very inconvenient and causes a lot of issues when you are trying to use the internet. These blocked websites can be anything and there have been times when the department blocked access to useful websites like Github, Pastebin, and some others. But there are a few tricks that you can use to bypass the blockage put in place by the DoT and we will look at all the ways that are present that will help you access these blocked websites.

Try “https” instead of “http”

Most websites out there use an SSL certificate nowadays which makes the data transfer between the website and the visitor safe and no data from the visitor can be stolen due to the SSL encryption. Usually, DoT just blocks the “http” version of the website and leaves the “https” version alone.

Unblock websites blocked by DoT - Use https

A live example of this is Adf.ly. When you visit http://adf.ly in your browser, you will be shown a notice message mentioning the website being blocked by DoT but as soon as you change the URL to https://adf.ly you will be able to open the website just fine. So, next time you see the “blocked by DoT” notice on a website, try accessing the https version instead of the normal http one. If that is something that you’re too lazy to do, then there are extensions for Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Opera that will automatically open the https version of a website whenever it is available.

Use a different DNS server

When these websites are blocked, they are blocked on ISP level which means an ISP makes changes to their DNS and by doing that, your computer cannot look up the IP address of the website resulting in the “blocked by DoT” error message. If that is the case, then changing your DNS to a public DNS will help you access these websites. Just follow the steps below for Windows (any version over Windows 7) and for Mac, you need to do some work and figure it out by Googling it.

  • On Windows, open the Start Menu and then search Control Panel.
  • Open the Control Panel and then move to Network and Sharing Center.

Unblock websites blocked by DoT - Change DNS

  • Click on the name of the network you are connected to. It can be a LAN or WiFi network, it doesn’t matter.
  • A new window will open up where you have to click on the Properties button.
  • Again, in the new window that opens up, look for Internet Protocol Version 4 and double-click on it to open another window.

Unblock websites blocked by DoT - Change DNS

  • Click on Use the following DNS server addresses and then enter the DNS server you are willing to use.

As you can see in the image above, I am using Google Public DNS but you can choose to use any other DNS that you like. It can be Cloudflare DNS or Open DNS. The choice is completely up to you. After entering the new DNS servers, just click the OK button. Now open Command Prompt from the Windows Start Menu and type “ipconfig /flushdns” without the quotes.

Unblock websites blocked by DoT - Flush DNS

This will flush your computer’s DNS cache and it will start using the new DNS servers you just set for your computer.

Use a web browser with built-in VPN

A lot of web browsers today come with built-in VPN and they can be used to access blocked websites quite easily. One of the most used browsers across the world, Opera comes with a built-in VPN that lets you browse the internet from pre-defined VPN locations. You can download the browser from Opera.com and after installing it, you need to go into Opera Settings and then Enable VPN for normal browsing.

Unblock websites blocked by DoT - Use Browsers with VPN

Another similar browser that comes with VPN is the Epic Browser. Both Opera and Epic are based on the same engine that Google Chrome is based upon – the Chromium engine and hence they work really well and with the addition of privacy based features, they are perfect for browsing websites that are blocked.

Use a VPN on your computer or smartphone

When it comes to keeping yourself anonymous on the internet, you can rely on VPNs as they hide your real IP address and other details and they let you browse the internet by masking your identity. This is done by routing the traffic through different servers across the world and it is important to choose the right VPN when you are choosing one.

Unblock websites blocked by DoT - Use a VPN program

VPN programs like ExpressVPN, Private Internet Access, Tunnelbear are premium VPN providers that provide you with their VPN services based on a month or yearly cost that they charge. But there are a few free VPNs out there that can be used for free. One of the most famous free VPN programs is Psiphon which lets you connect to a VPN server.

Use a web-based proxy browser

Unblock websites blocked by DoT - KProxy

A lot of web-based proxy browsers work as a proxy for accessing blocked websites. One of the most famous websites is KProxy which is used by millions across the world to access blocked websites. All you need to do is open the KProxy website in your browser and then enter the website you want to visit in the address bar shown on KProxy.

Some other websites like KProxy are Hide.me, ProxyBrowser.xyz and a few more.

Wrapping it up!

While there are a lot of other complex ways to access these blocked websites but why spend extra time on that when the simple methods mentioned above work well and also take a lot less time in comparison? The internet censorship in India is a huge issue and with no proper department to consider the modern world trends and knowledge to make these decisions, we will have to rely on such methods to access these websites blocked by DoT.
